From a shared doc to a finished book

An author's working document, turned into a branded book without changing a word.

The finished Conscious Biology book: Joda Williams's nautilus cover and the contents page

Joda Williams had written an introduction to Conscious Biology as a plain shared document, meant to be offered to readers from the Center for Conscious Biology's web page. Handing readers the raw document would have undersold the writing. I turned it into a finished book with a cover, a contents page and six chapters, set in the Center's own look, while keeping every word, bold, italic and line break exactly as she wrote it.

Start Right client work. Book design and production by Will Mosley as founder. The writing, the ideas and the cover art are Joda Williams's and the Center for Conscious Biology's; the book's content is not reproduced or described here.

From a shared document to a finished book

01

Never ship the raw document.

The author's file was ready to share as it stood, and the easy move was to post it. A plain document reads as a draft, though, and this was the first thing many readers would take home from the Center. The decision was to give the writing the presentation it deserved: a real cover, a contents page, chapter openers and a typeface chosen for long reading.

Every block of the text carried over word for word

02

Her words, untouched. Only the look is ours.

The text came straight from the author's own document export, 246 blocks with every bold, italic and line break carried over by script rather than retyped. The build decides only the look, so there was no step where a word could drift. Anything in the writing that might need a second look was a question for the author, never an edit.

The contents page, its page numbers set by rendering the book twice

03

Built like a product, not a one off.

The book is generated from code: the author's text, the Center's colors and type, and her own cover art from her page. The contents page numbers are found by rendering the book, reading where each chapter landed, and rendering again until the two passes agree, so the contents can never point to the wrong page. A change to the text is a rebuild, not a redesign.

The author approves the book before readers see it

04

The author signs off before readers see it.

The finished book went to the author for review before it went anywhere public. Once she approved it, it was published as a download on the Center's page the same day. That is now the standard for any client writing: a branded book with a cover and contents, checked word for word against the source, and the author's approval before release.
